Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis:

Our team took a three day trip down to Indiana to learn about CAD and Augmented/Virtual Reality. We took two visits to the University, the first for CAD, the second for A/V R.

IUPUI CAD & Machine Tool Lab: At IUPUI’s CAD & Machine Tool Lab, we learned the basics of drawing in CAD software along with the processes of various 3D printing and molding techniques. We viewed several 3D printers the university owned, along with the foundry and metal-casting labs used by university students. The whole event was hosted by Mentor Doug, a teacher for CAD software at IUPUI, who showed us the ins-and-outs of CAD drawing and 3D printing.

IUPUI Advanced Visualization Lab (AVL): We learned about advancements in the worlds of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). Jeff Rogers, the Principal Project Analysis of the AVL gave us a tour of the facilities and showed us the exciting technologies the AVL is producing. Such technologies include: a scanner which can near-perfectly scan any 3D object from the reality and import it into a CAD file, massive touchscreens for educational use, cards with codes which simulate assembly assembly instructions in AR, a huge VR space, and Microsoft’s HALO Lens, a device which puts AR into everyday life. With these devices, we created 3D art in the VR lab and browsed the internet while having a face-to-face conversation with fellow teammates.
